Why do we call it 'sculpture tile'?

For over 30 years I have been a professional artist

I have worked mostly as a sculptor, working with a wide variety of mediums including wood, bronze, ceramic, resins and most recently, concrete.

My subject matter has been largely animals, most notably, birds. To this end I have received many awards over the years, including two 'Best in World, Decorative Life size' awards from the Ward Foundation World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition . My work has been exhibited worldwide at museums including the British Museum of Natural History, The National Geographic Society in Washington, and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. For over twenty five years I have also been responsible for creating reproduction and special work for the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto Canada.

Making art in three dimensions is a challenging occupation, and my experience has shown me that while folks still enjoy the beauty of sculpture, finding space for 3d works can be a  problem for some. For this reason, about twenty years ago, I began to offer  work in 'bas relief', a time honored sculpture form which allows pieces to be displayed like a painting, simply hung on a wall. My further use of molds enabled me to provide the highest quality wildlife art at a very affordable price. As each piece is still hand cast and further, hand painted, the results are always 'one of a kind'.

Collectors who purchased these relief sculptures began asking if they could employ the works in kitchen back splashes, fireplace inserts, and showers. This led me to the world of concrete kitchen countertops, where I borrowed some of those materials to create my 'sculpture tile'.

Crafting my relief sculpture in waterproof cement has now enabled my items to be safely installed as tiles. Colors are permanent and achieved by adding pigment to the cement mix. Form is emphasized by the application of special concrete stains. Finally, an acrylic sealer is applied.  These concrete tiles can generally be installed in most locations indoors or out. Inquire if you have a special application.

For those who simply want to enjoy the beauty of these colorful art works, and not install as tiles, I still create the hand cast hydrostone plaster editions, as they are still a little more affordable, and have a special luminous quality to them. Be sure to differentiate between the concrete and the plaster when ordering.
